Trucks become invaluable assets during a disaster to distribute essential supplies such as water, food, medical equipment and shelter materials quickly and efficiently to affected areas. Truck drivers rely heavily on their knowledge of logistics and transport routes for delivery services that deliver water, food, medical supplies and shelter materials directly into affected communities.

Disaster restoration companies also help rebuild damaged infrastructure by transporting construction materials and machinery directly to disaster sites, aiding communities in recovering faster. This expedites rebuilding efforts.

Emergency Supplies

Following any disaster or emergency, people need food, water and medicine immediately. While relief workers and local authorities might arrive quickly on the scene, reaching all those in need could take days. That is why it is vitally important to prepare ahead and stockpile these supplies ahead of time. Home delivery offers an ideal option to minimize travel times while prescription home deliveries or curbside pickup offers another efficient means to meet this need allowing more time for other tasks to be accomplished.

Walmart Foundations are helping nonprofit organizations increase their ability to respond faster by supporting American Logistics Aid Network and other local nonprofits who specialize in logistics and supply chain expertise.

Infrastructure Reconstruction

Recovery phase of disaster response entails reconstructing damaged infrastructure and restoring essential services in affected communities, which often involves clearing debris, reconstructing housing units, and revitalising economies. This process may take months or even years depending on available resources and community participation (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine 2019).

Local governments rely on property and business tax revenue to finance water, sewerage and road projects. When these funds become depleted due to natural disaster, they must seek state and national government aid in order to continue these projects.

Rebuilding roads is critical to restoring economic activity and decreasing vulnerability levels in affected regions, but many reconstruction approaches that are used may not align or coordinate properly, due to limited knowledge or understanding of local issues. A unifying concept of infrastructure can address this challenge and enhance project coordination.

Volunteering

Businesses and organisations frequently encourage their employees to volunteer during disasters, often working in support functions like food delivery or operating distribution points. Volunteers may also be called upon to help organize wider community responses – this type of volunteering is known as spontaneous unaffiliated volunteerism (SUV).

Scanlon et al [77] investigated how Amstelland Safety Region in the Netherlands integrated informal volunteers into its emergency management system. They observed that policies were put in place that allowed emergency responders to work closely with citizens, existing organizations and emergent groups providing disaster assistance provided that participation is voluntary; tasks are safe for participants; and tasks add value to overall emergency responses.

Volunteers play an essential role in supporting the standard ICS Incident Command System structure during a disaster, from clearing and sorting debris to operating distribution points and helping in long-term recovery by renovating, repairing or rebuilding homes.

Humanitarian Assistance

Humanitarian assistance is provided in response to crises that surpass the capacity of local authorities to handle. Based on an initial rapid assessment and targeted to those most in need, humanitarian aid must adhere to key humanitarian principles like humanity, impartiality, neutrality and independence.

Domestically, Congress provides disaster relief primarily through its annual appropriations process; FEMA’s budget [PDF] reached $15 billion in fiscal 2021. USAID and the Department of State lead most federal disaster aid abroad by working closely with regional organizations, local governments and NGOs.

Complex emergencies have become more frequent over time, making them increasingly challenging to manage and fund. Aid workers involved with their work have also seen an increase in fatal incidents related to their duties; truck drivers involved with food deliveries as well as teachers working at charity schools like Beletweyne in Somalia who were killed by al-Shabab militants have all fallen victims to such acts of terror.
